The DSDC research group and the company iPronics have signed a collaboration agreement for the optimization of programmable photonic devices

The DSDC research group and the Valencian company iPronics have signed a collaboration agreement by which they will work together to optimize the electronic control and monitoring stages of programmable photonic devices.

The company iPronics Programmable Photonics is a spin-off of the Universitat Politècnica de València, which commercializes and democratizes access to the immense computational power of photonics, the science that exploits the advantages of signals that travel through light. iPronics programmable photonic processors share a common software-reconfigurable hardware platform. This low-cost solution allows the same hardware to be applied to an unlimited number of applications.

"Processors and chips based on electronic transistors are approaching the limits of their fundamental capabilities and programmable photonics is key to addressing, at low cost, the voracious appetite for computing power that many emerging applications require," says its COO, José Capmany. Among these applications, Daniel Pérez, CTO of the company, highlights “artificial intelligence, autonomous cars, 5G communications, the interconnection of data centers, quantum computing and the Internet of Things, as well as optical networking applications, where these devices are presented as a very promising alternative to current optoelectronic devices.”

The objective of the collaboration will be to improve the performance of iPronics' programmable photonic processors through an optimization of the electronic control and monitoring systems, as well as allowing the adaptation of the product to certain specific market niches.
