From July 5th to 20th, 2022, the Manuela Ballester Exhibition Hall of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universitat de València will host the exhibition "Direm el mar" by Elena Martí Manzanares. Invited artist in the 3rd International Congress CICELI (Female Creators in Literary and Intercultural Education) of the Universitat de València, Elena designs an interdisciplinary narrative journey - poetic, critical, ecological and social - in unison.
The proposal for an exhibition design with an immersive format of installation and video intervention was born from a project selected by the Ministry of Culture and Sport in 2020, within the programme of aid for research, creation and artistic production.
Through a collection of materials found in various marine sites along the Mediterranean coast, the aesthetic and critical voice of the artist, inspired by the verses of the poem "El mar" by Miquel Martí i Pol (1993), invites the viewer to actively co-create a new (individual and collective) narrative about what happens to plastic when it reaches the oceans and the importance of the magnitude of time required for this petroleum-derived material to degrade in the sea.
This is a socio-cultural and educational experience sponsored by the Chair for Cooperation and Sustainable Development of the Universitat de València within the People Axis (SDG 1-5), and inspired by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Agenda 2030 to take care of the future of people, planet and nature.
The exhibition also has the collaboration of other academic bodies such as the Documentation Centre of Contemporary Valencian Art Román de la Calle (CDAVC), the University Institute of Creativity and Educational Innovations (IUCIE), the Faculties of Teacher Training and Social Sciences, as well as the Department of Didactics of Musical, Plastic and Corporal Expression of the Universitat de València (Area of Arts Education).
The Direm el mar project is a cry of alarm about the sustainability necessary for the Planet and humanity that, paradoxically, reminds us, at the same time, of the infinite natural beauty of life, putting the focus on the need to offer a sustainable, creative and critical education for the society of the 21st century.
The exhibition is also the backbone of a new publishing project of the Universitat de València focused on "Sustainable, aesthetic and critical convergences in art education", under the title Ecònica. This innovative cultural proposal on the world of art and design in educational contexts, coordinated by professors Ricard Silvestre and Matilde Portalés of the Universitat de València, aims to build a referential and transferential bridge between society and the academic sphere, offering in its pages an open, transdisciplinary space for debate to promote sustainable, aesthetic and critical thinking in the contemporary classroom.
Along with a selection of researchers from the Universitat de València, the publication includes the academic participation of full professor Ricardo Marín from the University of Granada, professor Rebeca Zurru from the International University of La Rioja (UNIR) and other university experts from Spain. From the field of art and design, the edition of the first volume of Ecònica features the views and voices of a dozen creatives of different nationalities on the theme of nature and sustainability: Elena Martí, Cristina Almodóvar, Constance Guisset, Emma Giuliani, Emilie Vast, Joana Santamans, Hugo Martínez-Tormo, Xavier Monsalvatje, Laura Palau, Denica Vaselinova, Eva Okolowicz and Patricia Kuehfuss.
The graphic communication of the project has been carried out by the designer Alberto Herranz of the Ideas Fominaya studio, and the event is in line with the objectives of the World Design Capital Valencia 2022 programme to promote the teaching of art, design and creative thinking in the world of education through national and international professional connections.
