The best doctoral theses are rewarded for outstanding quality according to stated merits. Assessment shall be made only for the merits that applicants have claimed and accredited before 30 September of the academic year prior to the call for the most outstanding doctoral theses awards, and until the 30 September of the academic year following the oral examination (reading of the thesis).

Each academic year at least one award per area may be given provided ten theses have been defended and passed.

The application may be submitted in either of the two subsequent academic years after defending the thesis.

The following is taken into consideration in order to assess the candidates:

  1. The doctoral thesis and special circumstances that may have occurred during its preparation.
  2. Parallel publications that appear in the results of the thesis.
  3. Other merits directly related to the thesis.

Assessing the candidates’ merits follows a point system established by the Governing Council. This system is implemented before the call for awards and it is proposed by the relevant doctoral committee.
