The transition towards climate neutrality requires a parallel strategy that allows for the long-term sustainable supply of valuable materials needed for the development of energy storage, management, and control technologies, making a thorough review of all activities related to the extraction of geological resources on the planet necessary, to guarantee their social, environmental, and economic sustainability.
In this regard, Lithium-ion Batteries (LIBs) have a high content of metals such as Ni, Co, Li, and Mn. However, currently, after exhausting their useful life, they end up in landfills. To address this problem, the METALLON project studies the reconditioning and reuse of Lithium-ion Batteries (LIBs) in different sectors such as mobility or electrical-electronic. Likewise, the processes for the recycling and recovery of LIBs waste are designed and optimized through the improvement and research of the technologies and processes involved in the separation and recovery of metals, minerals, and other high-value materials.
