A workshop that proposes a reflection on the memory of dance and performance, with Valencia as a key setting. The central moment will come at 7:15 p.m. with the premiere of a new creation by Mónica Valenciano and María Muñoz, two essential figures of the contemporary scene.
The event proposes a gathering dedicated to reflecting on the collective memory of dance and performance over the past fifty years. It is part of the series “Squares and Performances”, within the framework of the national project “Spain in Freedom – 50 years”, an initiative of the Government of Spain coordinated by a special commissioner and the Secretariat of State for Democratic Memory.
PROGRAMME
12:00–14:00 and 16:00–18:30. Dance gathering in the Aula Magna.
19:15–20:00. Premiere of the piece “Che si può fare, che si può dire” by María Muñoz and Mónica Valenciano in the cloister.
María Muñoz (València, 1963) and Mónica Valenciano (Las Palmas, 1961) are two of the most disruptive, brilliant, and essential dance creators in Spain over the past forty years. For the first time, they have come together to develop a piece. They do so alongside the Faraig choir, with echoes of the 17th-century Italian composer Barbara Strozzi, and with the memory of those two young women who, in the 1980s, dressed as men in streets where gender and patriarchy were not yet discussed, but where every inch had to be fought for. A daily struggle against the objectification of women, both socially and artistically.
