The “Workshop on open data as a gateway to engagement at a European Union level”, organised by the Jean Monnet Citizens’ Module, was held on Wednesday 19 April at the Tarongers Campus.

This workshop, attended by young researchers and academic staff, addressed the importance of open data to improve the level of interest and engagement of citizens with the European Union.

The seminar featured presentations by lawyer Sebastián Senior Serrano, PhD student at the Faculty of Jurisprudence of the University of Rosario in Colombia; and Esteban López Arellano, student of the Master’s Degree in Human Rights, Democracy and International Justice of the UV.  Both addressed the “Creation of governance networks for sustainable development processes in protected ecosystems”.

Afterwards, María Jesús García García,

, professor of Administrative Law at the UV and director of the Jean Monnet Citizens’ Module, gave a lecture on the “Interaction between legislations and legal systems of protection in environmental matters”.

The speakers' interventions were followed by a lively debate on the right of citizens to enjoy the environment and the essential role played by the European Union as a legal system of reference in the protection and defence of these rights and as an important conduit of international law to the legal systems of the member states.

This workshop has been organised by the Jean Monnet Module. Citizens’ Integration into European Union Democracy (Project 101047164– CitEUdem) and the Doctoral Research Forum of the Faculty of Law of the UV.
