Jean Monnet Chair for Services of General Economic Interest in the framework of social and territorial cohesion

[Course 20:00, 2 Oct. - 6 Nov, dual-modality, face-to-face and online.] The Jean Monnet Chair of Services of General Economic Interest in the framework of social and territorial cohesion’ offers this free course with a certificate from its director, Mª Jesús García García.

This university outreach course will take place from Monday 2 October until Monday 6 November 2023 in the UV Faculty of Law (Tarronges Campus), from 16:30 to 20:30 in the afternoon. This course can also be attended online through Zoom.

Classes will take place on: 2, 16, 23 and 30 October and 6 November.

The course is free and each participant will receive a certificate of accreditation upon the completion. The course is financed by European funds and is part of the Jean Monnet Chair for Services of General Economic Interest in the framework of social and territorial cohesion (101047166 - SGEI-EU).

The course is designed for the general public as well as students and professors of Law who are interested in the material.

GOALS

Participants will be provided with tools to recognise and defend their rights as users and consumers, or to act on behalf of consumers and users in the defence of their rights.

PROGRAMME

  1. Essential services. Concept.
  2. Citizens' rights to essential services.
  3. Complaints and dispute resolution systems for users of essential services.
  4. Specific study of the peculiarities of each sector.

Consumers are at the heart of the single market as key actors for economic growth. From this perspective, they are subject to and covered by EU-wide consumer legislation. For years, the European Union has also been promoting consumer rights independently of competition law.

María Jesús García, head of the Jean Monnet Chair for Services of General Economic Interest in the framework of social and territorial cohesion, is a senior professor of Administrative Law at the Universitat de València and a Doctor of Law She was a fellow with the Ash Centre's Government Innovation Program (Harvard University) in 2017. She has given seminars and lectures at Harvard University as well as at European universities. In 2019, she was awarded the Blas Infante Prize for her research book on European Union law-making in the frame of smart regulation. Also in 2019, she was the runner-up in the contest held by the Financial Studies Centre (CEF), for her research paper titled “The European electoral system: when the total is not equal to the sum of its parts.”

The Jean Monnet Chair for Services of General Economic Interest in the framework of social and territorial cohesion aims to teach, research, network, publish, create and organise dissemination activities that serve to raise awareness of the importance of certain economic activities qualified by their relevance in meeting public needs, as well as by their impact on the social and territorial cohesion of the European Union and its citizens. Through the concept of SGEI, the EU authorities have tried to establish a common nomenclature for the different techniques and solutions developed by European countries to meet basic needs and to subject them to common rules in line with the application of internal market rules and possible exceptions.
