Biography

Professor of Journalism at the UV since 2017.  I began my academic career as an FPU scholarship holder at the UV in the Department of Contemporary History between 1987 and 1991. I read my thesis in January 1992 and became a PhD in History. Before joining the UV in 2003, I worked at the Faculty of Information Sciences of the CEU San Pablo in Valencia, attached to the UPV and the UCH-CEU in Valencia. Here I specialised in the discipline of communication history. I also taught tutorials at the UNED-Valencia and master's and doctoral classes at the UJI. I have published 47 scientific books, 150 book chapters and 9 prologues. I have written 61 research articles in scientific journals. Many of my works have been signed with other researchers, with whom I collaborate, especially with Professor Antonio Laguna. I have presented 107 papers and communications at different scientific conferences. I have supervised or co-directed 8 doctoral theses and I am currently supervising three more. I have been a visiting professor at the UCLM and at the University of Leipzig. I have organised several congresses, including that of the Association of Communication Historians held in 2007 in Valencia, that of the Ibero-American Network of Historians of the Press and Journalism in 2016 (the only one held in Spain by this important association) and the thirteen editions of the Josep Lluís Bausset Education Congress in l'Alcúdia (Valencia). The CNEAI has recognised me for 4 research projects. Since 2017 I lead a GIUV, Research Group of the University of Valencia: HISCOMECU, History of Communication and Media Culture. I have participated in 8 funded research projects and in two of them I have been PI. In terms of management, I have been director of two University Departments, I have prepared the adaptation of two degrees to the European Higher Education Area, I have been president of the Journalism CAT of my University, as well as Vice-Dean of Economics and Infrastructures of my Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication of the University of Valencia. Currently, I co-direct the official master's degree 'New Journalism, Political Communication and Knowledge Society', which is in its third edition. My research focuses on the convergence between the methods of social and cultural history and those of communication theory and history. I was part of one of the pioneering research groups in the social history of communication, the one that developed its work in the 1990s at the CEU San Pablo in Valencia (with the professors Antonio Laguna, Inmaculada Roca, Inmaculada Roca and Antonio Laguna).
Antonio Laguna, Inmaculada Ríus and Enrique Bordería). We then published a reference book in Spanish and Latin American universities, Historia de la comunicación social. Voces, registros y conciencias (Madrid, Síntesis, 1996). After my arrival at the public university, I became part of a research team, directed by Professor Josep Lluís Gómez Mompart, focusing on research into social communication. With Professor Mompart, I have worked on the development of the history of Valencian journalism and on projects on humorous and satirical communication in the media and on journalistic sensationalism and yellow journalism. I have close ties with the Association of Communication Historians. I am a founding member, I chaired it and I promoted its journal, RIHC. International Journal of the History of Communication, today one of the most prestigious in its field. And, with its collaboration, I organised the Valencia Congress in 2007 and the Congress of the Ibero-American Network of Historians of the Press and Journalism in 2016. I also belong to the Contemporary History Association and the Social History Association.
