The Research Group on Materials and Sustainability (MATS) at the University of Valencia has contributed to the recent book "Crystal Clear: A Guide to Healthier and More Sustainable Water Use", published by the University of Valencia and promoted by the Chair of Cooperation and Sustainable Development and the Vice-Rectorate for Sustainability, Cooperation and Healthy Life of the same university, with the support of the Generalitat Valenciana. In this context, Óscar Gil Castell and José David Badia Valiente co-authored the chapter titled "Benefits and Challenges of Using Plastic Bottles for Water Packaging", addressing a socially and environmentally significant issue: the use of plastic bottles for water packaging.

The chapter examines the benefits of using plastic bottles in terms of accessibility and convenience, but also discusses the main challenges associated with this material, such as its environmental impact and implications for sustainability. Furthermore, the text is part of a book that analyzes water from various perspectives, beginning with its properties and natural cycle, the relationship between water and human health, and the challenges of bottled water consumption, with special emphasis on the environmental footprint of plastics.

This book, divided into four main sections, also proposes strategies to reduce household water consumption and highlights the need for comprehensive education on sustainable water management, as well as the implementation of public policies that promote the responsible use of this essential resource.
