Presentation of our research in membrane technology to turn biogas into biomethane using anaerobic digestate as an absorbent in cooperation with Global Omnium
Dr Feliu Sempere Nàcher presented “Biogas upgrading to biomethane by polymeric hollow-fibre membrane contactors using digestate centrate as absorbent” (authors: M. Castro-Rubio, R. Jiménez-Robles, V. Martínez-Soria, T. Montoya, F. Sempere, M. Izquierdo at the 9ᵗʰ International Conference on Biotechniques for Air Pollution Control and Biorefinery (Biotechniques-2024), which took place at La Coruña (July 2024). This work includes some of the results of our collaboration with Global Omnium, within the project AVI Biometà, financed by Valencian Institute of Competitiveness and Innovation IVACE +i (Generalitat Valenciana), which shows the use of membrane technologies and utilisation of digestate for the improvement of biogas quality.
This study compares the performance of two types of hollow fibre membrane contactors for biogas enrichment to biomethane using different adsorbents: water, ammonia aqueous solution, and digestate draining from WWTP, which contains high concentrations of ammoniac nitrogen. The use of anaerobic digestate has shown promising results as an absorbent, promoting the process’ circularity with the incorporation of some streams studied in this project.
