The 21st Annual Congress of the European College of Sport Science (ECCS) was held in Vienna, Austria, from 6 to 9 July 2016 in the Austria Center Vienna (http://ecss-congress.eu/2016/16/).

Dr Isabel Castillo presented “Positive social-emotional conditions, basic psychological needs and well-being in high-performance athletes”, carried out in collaboration with Dr Isabel Balaguer and Beatriz Galilea, psychologist in charge of the Sport and Health Unit of the Catalan Sports Council in Barcelona.

This work examines a model of relations between athletes’ perception on the protection resources available at their training centre, their basic psychological needs and three well-being markers (subjective vitality, life satisfaction and self-esteem) in high performance athletes. The results show the importance of providing positive socioemotional conditions in training centres in order to promote a positive function and improve well-being in athletes.
