“Introduction to housing cooperatives based on transferring rights of use” is a massive open online course (MOOC).

The Universitat de València, through their Aula Empresocial and in collaboration with Sostre Cívic, presents the course “Introduction to housing cooperatives based on transferring rights of use”, an ongoing free training course available as of September 2025. This course is funded by the Labour and Social Economy Ministry and the NextGenerationEU and it is offered in Valencian and in Spanish.

This course aims to provide basic and practical knowledge necessary to promote, manage and creating housing cooperatives based in transferring rights of use projects. The programme is structured in six modules:

  1. What are housing cooperatives based in transferring rights of use? – Definitions, differences between other models, types, benefits.
  2. Managing cooperative groups – Project economics, human management, cohabitation.
  3. Cooperative creation and laws – State and autonomous laws, statues and legal duties.
  4. Fiscal laws – Applicable taxes, fiscal benefits, tax duties.
  5. Experiences – Real cases: projects in rural settings, for elderly people, inclusive communities, among others.

This course is directed by María Pilar Alguacil Marí, lecturer in Financial and Tax Law from the Universitat de València. Other relevant participants are Antonia Sajardo, Eva Ortigosa, Amaia Belastegui and Cristina R. Grau.

The MOOC format makes following the contents through videos and texts easier, with subtitles in Valencian and Spanish, depending on the module.
Each module can last from 5 to 9 hours.

This course presents a valuable opportunity for activists, association members, technicians, students and any person interested in housing alternatives that combine social, communal and sustainable housing. It is a training tool to drive new ways of living that are more collective, affordable and committed to general welfare.
