Tourism is one of the main economic activities of the EU with a wide impact on economic growth, employment and social development. The tourism industry in the EU represents 10% of the EU's GDP. The EU considers that tourism is an
important driver of the national economy and the labor market with a global impact on local communities. In Spain, tourism represents around 15% of GDP (INE, 2025).

How can we keep Spanish and European tourism at the forefront of a global market in the digital age? The objective of this research unit is to generate knowledge based on precise quantitative and qualitative methodology from the paradigm of the Intelligent Tourist Destination (DTI), articulated around innovation, technology, sustainability in its three dimensions, governance and
accessibility. The intelligent destination responds to the new demands and challenges of the digital society, according to the parameters of the UNWTO and the European
Commission in the field of tourism.

A change in these characteristics of the tourist ecosystem requires detailed studies from a multidisciplinary perspective, and the present research unit with an interdisciplinary team of researchers aims to contribute to this transformation from the generation of quality knowledge based on techniques and quantitative approximations and specific statistics, which allow analyzing big data and
providing intelligent solutions to tourism. In addition, economic, social and social planning studies will be carried out, which provide solutions to the new challenges that destinations face in the digital age, which can be translated into appropriate policies and actions to turn a destination into a Smart Destination, according to the Intelligent Tourist Destination (DTI) model.
