The Lyman-α emission line (Lyα; λ1215.67 ˚ A) is one of the most prominent spectral features in the ultraviolet (UV) spectra of galaxies. This line primarily originates from the recombination of monoatomic hydrogen in the interstellar medium (ISM), typically powered by intense star formation activity or the presence of an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). The recombination processes within star-forming regions or AGNs produce Lyα photons, which then interact with the surrounding medium, making Lyα a valuable diagnostic tool for understanding various galactic and environmental properties. The resonant nature of Lyα makes it sensitive to the density, ionization state, kinematics, and dust content of the ISM. Additionally, Lyα emission can be affected by neutral hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM), particularly at high redshifts, providing valuable insights into the large-scale ionization state of the Universe. In this thesis, we utilize Lyα emission as a primary probe to study galaxy properties and their evolution across cosmic time. The work is divided into two main projects: one focusing on the selection and study of quasars using wide-field, multinarrow band (multi-NB) surveys, and the other centered on the detailed study of a unique high-redshift galaxy, COLA1.
