Organised by:Faculty of Physics

Management Centre:Postgraduate School

Participating Universities:Universitat de València

Programme Coordinator:Gonzalo Olmo Alba

Places available for new students:35 places

Aims: The programme covers fields of basic physics and fields of relevant physical applications and trains the doctoral students to conduct research and to teach in the public and private sectors. The main aim is the writing and defence of a doctoral thesis in physics, in which process the doctoral student will get an extensive professional training in various fields, especially in those that require creativity and innovation. It shall provide skills to cope with contexts with little specific information, to find the key questions that must be answered to solve a complex problem, to design, create, develop and launch new and innovative projects, etc. The doctoral studies shall guarantee the acquisition of the basic competences established in the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education.

Description: The programme trains the doctoral students to conduct research and teach in the public and private sectors. The significance of the contribution of physics to technological development, and therefore the training of technologists, is crucial in any modern society that hopes to base its development on the leading knowledge. This programme covers fields of basic physics (theoretical and experimental nuclear and particle physics and astrophysics) and fields of relevant physical applications (photonic and medical physics). This coexistence is highly successful, enabling the development of common spaces, such as applications of nuclear physics to medical physics or converging lines of nonlinear optics and quantum optics with complex systems and foundations of quantum mechanics. This doctoral programme involve doctors of the following departments of the Universitat de València who collaborate in the organization thereof: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Applied Physics and Electromagnetism, Atomic, Molecular and Nuclear Physics, Theoretical and Optical Physics, doctors of CSIC through the Institute of Corpuscular Physics (Joint Centre of the Universitat de València-CSIC) and the Institute of Instrumentation for Molecular Imaging and doctors of the General Foundation of the Universitat de València which are attached as researchers to the departments or institutes mentioned above. Doctors in Physics from other departments of our University, Earth Physics and Thermodynamics, Physiology and from University Hospitals also participate. All this adds up a total of 148 doctors qualified to direct theses. Finally, foreign doctors participate both in joint supervision and as unique supervisor.
