ABSTRACT:
Ecotoxicology was born in the 70s as a sub-discipline of toxicology to assess the consequences of chemical pollution for ecosystems. Researchers working in this area started to generate a bunch of laboratory toxicity data and principles that were rapidly embraced by regulatory bodies to develop risk assessment guidelines and quality standards. However, the aim of this discipline was somewhat blurred, and our understanding on how chemical pollution affects populations and communities forming ecosystems is still limited. In this talk I will discuss research needs and innovative approaches that should be taken into account to improve the ecological relevance of this discipline.
