Gas chromatographer with single quadrupole mass spectrometry detector, GC-MS, applying volatile compound analysis.

Description

Among the main characteristics of the available gas-mass spectrometers, it’s worth highlighting:

Gas chromatographer with Single quadrupole mass spectrometry detector, model 5977A. Composed of:

  • Gas chromatographer, model Agilent 7890B with:
    • Multimode inlet: Split, Splitless and/or pressure pulse injection, solvent vent injection.
    • COMBIPAL multi-technique automatic inlet with liquid, Head Space and Solid-phase Microextraction samples via immersion or head space.
  • Mass spectrometer model 5977A:
    • Mass range of 50-1050 m/z.
    • Electron impact source.
    • SIM, SCAN or synchronous SIM/SCAN mode.

Gas chromatographer with Single quadrupole mass spectrometry detector, model 5977B. Composed of:

  • Gas chromatographer, model Agilent 7890B with:
    • Multimode inlet.
    • Automatic inlet 7693 for liquid injection.
  • Mass spectrometer model 5977A:
    • Polar and non-polar columns of: 30m x 0.25 x 0.25µm.
    • Quantitative and qualitative Masshunter control software.
    • NIST library 2011, Pesticides, Willey.
Practical implementation

Gas chromatography can be widely implemented in organic volatile molecule identification and quantification. The industry focuses more on assessing the purity of reactants and reaction products, as well as monitoring the reaction sequence. In the oil industry, it’s possible to analyse gasoline constituents, mixtures of refinery gases, etc. This technique is also used in studies on water contaminants, such as insecticides, pesticides and herbicides, environment, fragrances, industrial chemical products, etc. Research-wise, it’s also used for the identification of a compound or one of its fragments via its mass spectrometer by library comparison.

The GC-MS equipment has two main implementations:

  • Qualitative sample analysis via SCAN acquisition for the obtainment of spectres and its posterior compound identification by using the available “match score” value libraries. The equipment’s SW features automatic compound extraction tools via deconvolution, which allows to obtain a list of the sample’s compounds.
These qualitative analyses can be applied to liquid samples or analyses of volatiles by means of Headspace or SPME sampling.
  • Quantitative compound analysis in liquid or volatile samples by standard injection and the creation of a calibration line with or without internal standard.
