General description of the evolution of accounting research from the seminal works of 1968 to the present day, and the usefulness of research results to implement evidence-based regulation. The role of accounting in reducing information asymmetries and agency problems, and more broadly, in contributing to social well-being, will be discussed, and how accounting research can help achieve these objectives
