What is the supervision of a doctoral thesis?

Supervising a doctoral thesis is the academic function of guiding, supervising and ensuring the scientific and methodological coherence of the research carried out by the doctoral candidate up to its defence.

Who can supervise a doctoral thesis at the University of Valencia?

Doctors who are part of the doctoral programme's staff. You can consult the list of potential supervisors and the research lines to which they are affiliated in the details for each programme.

Can you supervise a thesis without being a professor at the University of Valencia?

Yes. External researchers with a Doctorate may supervise or co-supervise doctoral theses if they can demonstrate sufficient research experience and obtain authorisation from the Academic Commission.

How many supervisors can a doctoral thesis have?

As a general rule, each doctoral thesis will have one supervisor. Exceptionally, the Academic Commission may authorise co-supervision (up to three co-supervisors) when there are academic, interdisciplinary or institutional collaboration reasons that justify it.

What is the difference between a supervisor and a thesis director?
  • Supervisor: Oversees the suitability of the doctoral candidate's training activities within the doctoral programme and must be a permanent member of academic staff at the UV.
  • Director: Is responsible for scientific supervision and the development of the research and can be external to the University of Valencia.

The same person can hold both roles if authorised to do so by the Academic Committee.

Does the supervisor have to be affiliated with the thesis's research line?

Yes. The supervisor must be authorised to supervise theses in the research line to which the doctoral thesis is registered.

When should the thesis supervisor be assigned?
