The programme focuses on training between profiles offered and, from them, the following objectives are pursued: 

  1. To provide an advanced training in the research methodology techniques of the different fields of Spanish studies in the knowledge areas of Spanish Language, Spanish Literature and Portuguese Philology, with the objective of guiding for the development and defence of a doctoral thesis, all of this in coherence with the lines of research of the Department of Spanish of the UV. 
  2. To ensure that the training programme qualifies students for the research, by means of the learning of knowledge and methodologies necessary for the development of a research project and, subsequently, a doctoral thesis.
  3. To tutor students in their advanced training, by providing them necessary tools to favour their autonomy in the field of research and develop the skills and abilities.
  4. To facilitate student's mobility, by providing them the official information, contributing to document processing and advising them on the destination choice of mobility and other relative issues.
  5. To contribute to the achievement of research grants, by providing the students the information of calls and assistance in the application process, especially in the preparation of their curriculum and in the academic fields in relation with the future research.
  6. To encourage to participate in the research groups and research projects of the Department of Spanish Philology.
  7. To advise students in the use of databases, and preparing them for the location, handling and discrimination of the bibliographical information and electronic resources.
  8. To apply these knowledge also to the professional field, by means of a practice training in specific working applications in the field of literature, language and theatre, for which will count on partner institutions such as the Spanish Language Institute (Spanish Research Council (CSIC)), the University Institute of Applied Modern Languages (University of Valencia), the Royal School of Dramatic Arts (Madrid), Theatre Documentation Centre of the INANEM, Max Aub Foundation, Gulbenkian Foundation, Interdisciplinary Institute for Latin-America Studies, International Institute of the Mediterranean Theatre, Camoens Institute, Communication Group, Technolinguistics, Language Centre of the University of Valencia, editorials, some companies, etc.
  9. To provide students the appropriate training and instruments to acquire some of the following competences, depending on the pathway or coursed line:

9.1  Knowledge:

  • Advanced linguistic and communicative knowledge in Spanish language (grammar, pragmatic, phonetics and phonology, lexicography and lexicology).
  • Advanced knowledge of linguistic varieties of the Spanish language in the Spanish world and the Spanish contact with other languages.
  • Advanced knowledge of the internal and external history of the Spanish language and historiography.
  • Advanced knowledge and applications of the trends and methodologies of the Spanish linguistic nowadays (methodological novelties and latest trends).
  • Advanced knowledge and applications of the Spanish language for specific purposes (applied linguistics): their teaching as a mother tongue or foreign language, legal Spanish, linguistic advice, specialised discourses, etc. 
  • Advanced knowledge about the linguistic regulation and its use through the ages.
  • Advanced knowledge of Spanish literary and theatrical texts as a culture heritage: its edition in different formats, its location and cataloguing, its diffusion.
  • Advanced knowledge of Spanish literary and theatrical texts as an object of study: Philology, History, Theory, Critics, of literary and dramatic texts and its practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of genre studies and writing of women.
  • Advanced knowledge of tools, programmes and specific computer applications for language, literature or theatre in the Spanish world. Application of new technologies in the literary knowledge and training resources in the network.
  • Advanced knowledge of the history of Spanish or Latin American literature and their relations with the cultural industry (journalism, cinema, radio, etc.) and the new technologies (webpages, hypertexts, etc.).
  • Advanced knowledge of issues, problems and reasons of the history of Spanish or Latin American literature in their relations with history, art, philosophy or politics.

9.2 Skills and abilities (skills):

  • Ability to locate, operate and discriminate bibliographical information and electronic resources, referred to language, literature or theatre in Spanish.
  • Ability to elaborate correct in a correct and properly way different kinds of oral and written texts.
  • Ability to assess critically the style of a text and to formulate alternative proposals.
  • Ability to identify problems and research questions and assess their relevance in the field of language, literature or theatre in Spanish.

9.3 Attitudes and values (knowing to be):

  • Capacity for analysis and synthesis.
  • Capacity for the right expression of their own ideas and communication in social life.
  • Ability to work in group and analyse problems for their decision and decisions.
  • Ability to debate and respect the opinion, work and ideas of the other ones.
  • Ability to analyse alien approaches and develop both a critical and self-critical attitude.
