The best doctoral theses are rewarded for outstanding quality according to stated merits. Assessment shall be made only for the merits that applicants have claimed and accredited before 30 September of the academic year prior to the call for the most outstanding doctoral theses awards, and until the date of the call for applications and, in any case, up to the two academic years following the reading of the doctoral thesis, will be valued.

Each academic year at least one award per area may be given provided ten theses have been defended and passed.

The application may be submitted in either of the two subsequent academic years after defending the thesis. This period may be extended until there are prizes available in the area.

The following is taken into consideration in order to assess the candidates:

  1. The reports issued by the members of the examining board of the doctoral thesis and, where appropriate, the international mention.
  2. The most relevant publications or contributions in which the results of the doctoral thesis appear.
  3. Other merits directly related to the doctoral thesis.Parallel publications that appear in the results of the thesis.

Assessing the candidates’ merits follows a point system established by the Governing Council. This system is implemented before the call for awards and it is proposed by the Doctoral School.
