EDUCATION: Degree in Physical Therapy (special distinction). Given my interest in teaching and research, I completed my doctoral thesis in physical therapy in 2014, receiving an international doctoral distinction and special doctoral distinction. I have also completed the CAP and other teacher training courses (479 hours) aimed at improving teaching. TEACHING EXPERIENCE: I have been teaching since 2006-2007 (18 academic years) in the “Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy” and the “Official Master's Degree in Functional Recovery in Physical Therapy” at the University of Valencia (UV). I am the professor responsible for one undergraduate course and three graduate courses, and I have supervised three doctoral theses, 17 undergraduate final projects, and 13 master's final projects. I have participated in 13 teaching innovation projects (five as the professor in charge). I am the professor responsible for one undergraduate course and three graduate courses, and I have supervised three doctoral theses, 17 undergraduate final projects, and 13 master's final projects. I have participated in 13 teaching innovation projects (five as the professor in charge). RESEARCH ACTIVITY: I began my research activity in 2010 in the FRESHAGE (healthy aging) research group, led by Dr. José Viña (Department of Physiology, UV), which allowed me to address lines of research related to aging. In 2016, I began researching physiotherapy with the UBIC group (clinical biomechanics research) in the Department of Physiotherapy, led by Dr. Pilar Serra. I completed a three-month predoctoral stay in Germany with Dr. Tilman Grüne and another short postdoctoral stay in San Sebastián with Dr. Ander Mateu, both considered leaders in the field of physiology. This research work has resulted in my participation in 16 regionally or nationally funded research projects and the publication of more than 80 scientific articles and one book chapter. I have also presented 160 papers at conferences, many of which have been published, and six of which have received research awards. I received the award for best young researcher from the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology in 2017. Finally, I have two recognized six-year periods of research, with an H-index of 26 (WoS). MANAGEMENT: I held the academic position of Degree Coordinator for the Bachelor's Degree in Physiotherapy at the Faculty of Physiotherapy (UV) from April 1, 2015, to June 15, 2020, and since that same date, I have held the position of Vice Dean of the same Faculty.

He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Valencia and received his doctorate, cum laude, in 1986 from the same university. He completed his studies in the United Kingdom and the United States, with stays at Oxford University (1985-1986) and Harvard Medical School (1989-1991). He was also a visiting professor at Chicago Medical School. He held a FPI fellowship from the Ministry of Science and Technology and obtained a NATO Fellowship for his postdoctoral stay in the US. He has served as director of the doctoral program at the Faculty of Medicine and is currently director of the UV's Master's Program in Rare Diseases. He is a visiting professor at several postgraduate programs. He has supervised 23 doctoral theses, several of which have been awarded has international doctorates and extraordinary awards. He served as Executive Coordinator of the Central Medical Research Unit (2004-2012), Vice Dean of Research (1999-2000 and 2005-2012), and finally Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry (2012-2018). ROMA MATEO, CARLOS |
Biography | |||
|
Carlos Romá Mateo (Valencia, 1980) is a Biochemist and holds a Ph. D. in molecular biology and genetics. The theme of his doctoral thesis (2004 - 2009, Prince Felipe Research Center and Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester) was the study of protein families involved in cell signaling in the context of cancer, after which he studied the disease of Lafora, a rare type of epilepsy of fatal consequences (2009 - 2013, Institute of Biomedicine of Valencia - CSIC). From there, his research career has been deepening in the field of rare diseases, from the perspective of oxidative stress and epigenetic alterations. Recently, he has initiated a line of research focused on the molecular alterations resulting from cytotoxicity mediated by circulating histones in the context of sepsis. His teaching career began in 2015 at the European University of Valencia, to finally join the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of the Universitat de València as professor and researcher since 2017. He has three research periods (six-year periods) recognized by the CNEAI and currently directs the line of research in rare childhood epilepsies in the Laboratory of Pathophysiology of Rare Diseases of the Department of Physiology. He is the coordinator of the Consolidated Group for Teaching Innovation in Narrative Physiology (FISIONARR), where he leads teaching innovation projects based on the use of comics and other audiovisual materials as tools to promote learning in health sciences. In recent years he has been doing many scientific outreach activities, writing in his own blog and in other web pages, performing talks and monologues, as well as participating in all kinds of science dissemination events. He is a writer in Principia, collaborator in Mapping Ignorance, and co-creator and scriptwriter of the bio-science fiction comic The OOBIK proteotype, together with the illustrator Gerardo Sanz, as well as the author of three books about epigenetics, and evolution. Since 2022 he has been the Academic Director of Continuing Education at the University of Valencia, coordinating the university's own degrees and continuing education programs in the Vice-Rectorate for Continuing Education, Teaching Transformation and Employment. |
