The Valenciaport Chair of Port Economics, of the Universitat de València and the Port Authority of Valencia (APV), presents its second Quarterly Report on the 2024 International Economic Situation.

This newly published report of the Valenciaport Chair of Port Economics on the international situation was presented by Vicente J. Pallardó, head of the Chair and a tenured university professor of Applied Economics at the UV. In this report, the following topics are discussed:

  • Introduction: The report predicts the start of a cycle of cuts from June onwards, as well as the introduction of protectionist measures.
  • Focus on: The report states that wages are growing at the right pace to contain the loss of purchasing power without contributing to price increase.
  • International Reference Prices It is reported that the trends of previous months are mainly maintained in this regard.
  • Understanding the Quarter in Seven Tips: Among other issues, moderate wage growth is shown again and a possible decline in interest rates is expected, which should not exempt the European Union from carrying out long-term structural reforms to boost real economic growth.
  • Reflection on International Trade: The analysis focuses on the Spanish economy’s exports and concludes that, even though the traditional orientation towards European markets continues to dominate the sector, our companies are increasingly positioning themselves in economies that, although they have lower per capita income (and therefore, markets), offer growing opportunities due to their greater economic dynamism.

Future reports will attempt to introduce some other parallel reflections on the evolution of the profile of the Spanish export sector over the last two decades.
