The Chair of Scientific Culture for Climate Emergency (CCC Chair), directed by Olga Mayoral García-Berlanga, Adjunct Professor of the Department of Experimental and Social Sciences Education and deputy director of the UV Botanical Garden, was created in 2022 thanks to a collaboration agreement between the Universitat de València and the Valencian Department of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition.
The aim of the Chair is to contribute to the acquisition of the skills and abilities that people need to build fairer and more sustainable societies, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda. The Botanical Garden of the Universitat de València is leading this initiative by highlighting its resources and knowledge.
The urgency and seriousness of the great challenges we face requires the education system to address them from all possible approaches, levels, subjects, target groups, tools and resources.
The Universitat de València has addressed this educational demand with the creation of an Institutional Chair, conceived and designed to deal holistically with the problem of Climate Change from a competency-based approach, without losing sight of the interaction it maintains with other major global crises. Within this framework of action, a comprehensive intervention that pursues the following specific objectives is articulated:
- To promote scientific literacy in order to learn about and understand the processes that affect us, with special attention to Climate Change, and thus be able to participate in conscious and effective decision-making.
- To encourage reflection on current socio-environmental issues.
- To work on the real needs of our immediate social and environmental surroundings with the aim of improving them.
- To foster understanding of the complexity of the issues within a spatially and temporally changing context.
- To promote the pursuit of actions in line with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), understanding the impact of the numerous consequences of their implementation.
- To promote education outside the classroom as an essential resource in the acquisition of competences in Sustainability and Climate Change.
