Mediterranean vs temperate populations"

SEMINAR(i):

How do macrophytes respond to water restoration treatments and temperature increases? Mediterranean vs temperate populations

WHO?: Asia (Joanna) Rosińska  (Department of Environmental Medicine, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland)

LANGUAGE?: English

WHEN?: Thursday15/12/2022 - 12:00 am.

WHERE?: Seminar Room - SS6 (Institutes building floor -1)

ABSTRACT:

Global warming and eutrophication are two main freshwater ecosystem challenges. The role of aquatic plants is crucial for the proper functioning of lakes. Various restoration methods are applied to improve water quality. The most common method is chemical restoration, based mainly on iron and aluminium coagulants. Still, little is known about the collective impact of progressive warming and coagulants on the growth of submerged plants in restored lakes.

I would like to show you the results of our laboratory experiments about the influence of two iron coagulants (Fe2(SO4)3 and FeCl3) in increased temperature on two submerged species – Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) and hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) from Spain and Poland. Same species, but… did they react differently in higher temperature, or is the origin not important? Did they respond the same way to two different iron coagulants? Come and see what we observed.
