CONTENTS OF THE TEACHING INNOVATION PROJECT: “COOP-SDG  DEVELOPMENT AID AS A STRATEGY TO CONSOLIDATE THE SDG OF THE SECOND CYCLE OF UNIVERSITY LEARNING”

The PID focuses on two main strategic lines:

  • Design of strategies to incorporate the SDG in teaching
  • Active methodologies for learning

What is the objective of the PID?

The project aims to help the students of the Master's degree on Development cooperation acquire the skills necessary to link the first year teachings, in general and specific subjects such as those of the two specialties taught (health in developing countries and local developing integral planning), with the SDG.

How to conduct the project in class?

Starting from an existing problem or problems (chosen by the professor) in a developing country or region that directly affects the attainment of the SDG a study tool will be implemented to analyse the situations trough the SWOT analysis (template attached). The theoretical contributions are based on real experiences and cases in the field of development cooperation, so that all the analyses (SWOT) that are carried out will integrate and promote service-learning from knowledge and social responsibility.

Through this diagnosis, it will be possible to study the problem linked to the SDG (where de speciality is framed) as well as the situation of the studied territories and enunciate: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. In addition, when possible, it is intended that the students as a whole raise a possible action or actions with which in that region or country could achieve the attainment of that SDG by 2030, being development cooperation the basis of the process.

The template is divided in two main sections to fill by professors and students:

  • On one hand, the responsible professor must fill in a previous section with this information:  the title of the subject, the identification of the problem, its link with the subject, the link of the problem identified for development with the SDGs and how this problem can contribute to the SDG.
  • On the other hand, the students will participate in a workshop in class to fill in the SWOT and the actions (in small groups if possible). In addition, it is recommended to debate and contrast the SWOTs in class.
  • Once the activity is finished the professor will fill in a final SWOT with each group’s contributions. This document will be uploaded to the section good practices in the MCAD’s (Master’s degree in Developed Aid) website.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PID:

  • Know the specific goals of the SDG and its link to Development cooperation.
  • Implement the skills learned in each study subject and how the development cooperation is necessary and can contribute to the attainment of the SDG.
  • Present (current) problems in developing countries (or regions) that ballast the attainment of the SDG.
  • Complete SWOTs starting from a real problem and analyse the situation from territorial and social perspectives and ensure the compliance of the SDG.
  • Design (real) solutions to reduce or solve those problems and route those countries or regions towards the compliance of the SDG.

ACTIONS

  • Knowing the importance of the connection between development cooperation and the SDG.
  • Identify and pose real problems linked to the selected subjects and SDG.
  • Coordinate work between the teaching staff and the students to fill in the SWOTs that will be clear and essential diagnosis elements to identify problems and potential solutions.
  • Plan real solutions for the improvement of the countries or regions so they can implement them to attain and reduce problems and inequalities.

What subjects and professors are involved in the PID?

In the Common core curriculum we have:

  • 42895 Basic concepts of development: Awatef Ketiti and Albert Mora
  • 42896 Development aid: Raúl de Arriba

The subjects of each specialty are:

  • Specialty of integral planning of local developing:
    • 42897 Fundamentals and theories for planning and managing territorial development: Joaquín Martín and Javier Serrano
    • 42898 Methods, techniques and tools for planning and managing local development: Ana Sales
  • Specialty of health in developing countries:
    • 42904 Disease in developing countries: Marius Fuertes and María Trelis

What do we do with the SWOT?

We create a repository in the website of the MCAD with the SWOT and the possible solutions linked to the SDG which could be consulted freely. Like so, the conclusions the professors and students reach, as they advance in the subjects and problems, will be available in open access.
