Amparo Aguado, Professor of the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology of the Universitat de València, has been honoured with the Carmen de Burgos Feminist Dissemination Award for an article on horizontal segregation of port longshorewomen. The 5th edition of this Award is convoked by the Asociación de Estudios Históricos de la Mujer, AEHM (Association for the Historical Studies of Women) and the University of Málaga. In previous editions, this award has been handed to female researchers, writers, journalists and scientists such as Rosa Cobo, Anna Freixas, Eulalia Pérez, Flora de Pablo or Soledad Gallego-Díaz, among others.

In the 2018 edition, the award takes into account articles published in 2017 on informational press and journals, either printed or online. They are rewarded with a financial envelope of €2,000. The award shall be presented on March 8th at the University of Málaga along with the Victoria Feminist Research Award of the academic Andalusian institution.

The research by Amparo Aguado, Women in a Men’s world. “Port longshorewomen” was published on Revista de Estudios y Cultura, in a special number on 7 March 2017. It exposes the situation of a female collective such as the longshorewomen, working in a masculinised profession, through the study of the case of the Valencian port, the second of Spain and first of the Mediterranean in the movement of containers.

“The participation of the labour force of women in this profession varies a lot in each Spanish port, also European.” “It swing between non-existent presence in ports like Algeciras’ one until 10% levels, as it is the case of the port of Valencia”, states Amparo Aguado in her work. Besides, the article focuses on the challenge face by new female workers “the pressure, observation and questioning of their competence” by their male co-workers. This forces these women to constantly prove their value in order to achieve recognition.

The availability requested by this profession “is an aggravating element for those with family responsibilities, a significant fact if we take into account that normally these family caring practices are carried out by women”, points out the university researcher. In this sense, the 6 hours’ workday in Valencia implies the possibility of a voluntary double turn, normally taken by men as they have more predisposition than women “as commonly women have to attend the obligations of caring.” This fact shall have an effect on a lower salary for women. However, this article awarded with the Carmen de Burgos Feminist Dissemination Award 2018 highlights an increasing percentage of women as economic heads of the family unit.
