Description and Characteristics

The official Master's Degree in Gender and Equality Policies consists of two study pathways:

  • Pathway 1: Research and Analysis of Equality Policies.
  • Pathway 2: Equality Officers and Equality Policy Management.

Each of the two pathways comprises a total of 90 ECTS credits, of which 76 correspond to taught modules and 14 to the Master's Thesis.

The Universitat de València has a long-standing tradition in the field of Gender Studies. It has offered elective undergraduate courses, its own Master's Degree in Equality Officers, and a doctoral programme.

Demand for the Programme

A growing demand for these studies is expected due to the increasing need in recent years for specialised training in women's studies across a wide range of professional fields, including public administrations, education, healthcare and others, as well as the need for specific professional training for equality officers.

Evidence of this can be seen in the evolution of enrolment in the interdisciplinary doctoral programme "Gender, Knowledge, Subjectivity and Culture", which, until its discontinuation and subsequent transformation into the Doctoral Programme in Gender Studies, showed a steadily increasing demand.

This demand is clearly sustainable in view of the needs arising from the implementation of the Valencian Regional Government's Equality Act between Women and Men, the Comprehensive Law against Gender Violence, and the Organic Law on Effective Equality between Women and Men.

Legal Framework

The Master's Degree in Gender and Equality Policies aims to fulfil both the requirements established by specific equality legislation and those relating to the implementation of the Organic Law on Universities.

In this regard, particular attention should be paid to Organic Law 1/2004 of 28 December on Comprehensive Protection Measures against Gender Violence, especially Article 4.7, and Organic Law 3/2007 of 22 March on Effective Equality between Women and Men, especially Article 25. Finally, Royal Decree 1393/2007 implementing the Organic Law on Universities (LOU) should also be taken into account.

Places

Fifty new places are offered each academic year across the two specialisations: the research pathway, delivered on campus, and the professional pathway, delivered online. As shown by first-year enrolment figures, both the growing enrolment trend in the research pathway and the stable enrolment in the professional pathway, with around twenty-five new students each year, support the allocation of 25 places for each specialisation.

Demand has grown exponentially in recent years, to the point that all available places have been filled through first-round applications since the 2019–2020 academic year.
