At present, and similarly to other fields within the health sciences, the training of nurses through undergraduate university studies has enabled nursing professionals to achieve a sufficient level of competence, albeit of a generalist nature. Due to scientific and technological advances, nursing practice is evolving towards the need for greater specialised knowledge and increased autonomy within the healthcare system.
