Specialised training to fight global cyber attacks

Cyber-attacks are progressively becoming one of the most recurring threats in the digital era. The appearance of the ICT and technologic advances have created new crime scenarios and make the population bring up the need to come up with new safety systems to fight them. Did you know that the best tool for that is specialised training like the one offered by the Master’s Degree in Telecommunications Engineering?

16 may 2017

Last Friday 12 May, a powerful cyber-attack at a global level paralysed huge companies and institutions like i.e. Telefónica or the English healthcare through the malicious software known as WannaCry(Ransom: Win32.WannaCrypt). What was the horrible result of this? The encryption of thousands of data of the computer being used by criminals to demand a ransom coming from users who do not give up getting their data back. The range of this new crime of the 21st century was enormous. The total number of computers affected by this attack only 3 days after increased up to 200,000 in 150 different countries.

Certainly, these digital crimes are one of the threats concerning Internet users, who are a very high rate of the global population. Because of that, it is increasingly more necessary to figure out how we can face these new felonies threatening citizens’ safety. And, of course, to fight those attacks in the knowledge era has to do with specialised training.

The Master’s Degree in Telecommunications Engineering offers necessary theoretical knowledge about safety threats on the net and security in net devices.

The Master’s Degree in Telecommunications Engineering of the Universitat de València is one of those postgraduate studies that prepare and specialise engineers in matters of digital safety issues. The subject Network security‘ is included, whose goal is to prepare students for getting official certifications that guarantee safety in a corporative net facing external and internal attacks, both through cable and wireless networks. Among the contents that are the backbone of this obligatory subject and will be the base of the theoretical knowledge of the students, there are the safety threats in the networks (i.e. fundamental principles of safe nets, worms, viruses and trojans or the attack methodologies like the one commented in this article) or the safety on net devices (switches, routers, firewalls, etc.).

These postgraduate studies are constantly updating the knowledges of the students of Telecommunications, who will acquire the required professional competences to face new threats in the digital era.  Because of all this, training is important when it comes to face cyber-attacks.
