Javier Pemán és llicenciat en Medicina i Cirurgia per la Universitat Complutense de Madrid i doctor per la Universitat de València, especialista en Microbiologia i Parasitologia des de 1991 i Màster Internacional en Malalties Parasitàries Tropicals per la Universitat de València en 1994. Marta Garrido és graduada en Farmàcia per la Universitat de València i Màster en Malalties Parasitàries Tropicals per la Universitat de València. En l'actualitat és resident de la Unitat de Micologia i Parasitologia del Servei de Microbiologia, a l'Hospital Universitari La Fe (València).

El paludisme, o malària, és una malaltia potencialment mortal causada per paràsits que es transmeten a l'ésser humà per la picada de mosquits femella infectats del gènere Anopheles. En 2015, el paludisme es va seguir transmetent en 91 països i àrees. La malària causa més d'un milió de defuncions a l'any i la mort d'un nen cada minut.

Núria Gironès is Dr in Biological Sciences and expert in Immunopathology of Chagas’ Disease. She is Associate Principal Researcher to the research group of Dr Manuel Fresno of the Center of Molecular Biology "Severo Ochoa” of Madrid and her investigation aims to develop works oriented towards the study of the Immunoregulation in infection by Trypanosoma cruzi. She is the author of several publications in journals of high impact of the specialty on the subject including aspects of Molecular Biology and Immunology of the disease.

Dr. Jiménez-Barbero is a Researcher Professor and Director of the CIC BIOGUNE (Bilbao), a position he has occupied since 2014. He obtained his Doctorate in Chemistry at the Autonomous University of Madrid in 1987. He held a position as a post-doctoral researcher at the National Institute for Medical Research de Mill Hill (United Kingdom) and collaborated with the Carnegie Mellon University (USA) between 1990 and 1992. In 1996 he was appointed as a senior scientific researcher at the Institute of General Organic Chemistry of CSIC and in 2002 he moved to the Biological Research Center (CIB-CSIC), where he directed the Department of Chemistry and Physic Biology.

Esperanza Rodríguez is a doctor in biology and a specialist in Parasitology, Molecular biology and immunology. She is a member of the research group of the Parasitology Service of the National Centre of Biology, Carlos III Health Institute of Madrid and her research aims for developing studies to improve the diagnosis and reference of relevant parasitism.

Resistance to intestinal parasites is investigated

A group of researchers of Universitat de València, professors of Master's Degree in Tropical Parasitic Diseases, have depicted a biological mechanism which can be determinant to explain the resistance against intestinal helminths. The report, published in the journal “Scientific Reports” of Nature Group, focuses on the processes determining the production of interleukin (IL)-25 and its role of this cytokine on the resistance against these parasites.

Chagas is a neglected tropical disease which has spread along the globe due to population movements. In addition to the biomedical aspects, the psychosocial dimension of a chronic disease charged of stigma, fear and hopelessness must also be taken into account. The students had the opportunity to know firsthand the most human side of this disease thanks to the participation of the doctor Navarro and Briggite Jordan (health worker specialised in Chagas) of Mundo Sano.
