Les illes Maldives i Sri Lanka, al nord de l'oceà Índic, han aconseguit eradicar la filariasis limfàtica, en el que suposa un avanç significatiu de la secció de l'OMS per a la regió del sud-est asiàtic contra les malalties tropicals. Aquesta malaltia desatesa ha copejat a la població de la zona durant dècades i havia obligat als malalts a arrossega un estigma derivat de la discriminació i la pobresa.

The central headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations have designated the Sanitary Parasitology Unit of the Universitat de València as an international Reference Centre for parasitic zoonotic diseases. These are animal diseases that are communicable to humans, such as leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, some types of schistosomiasis, fascioliasis or filariasis, among others.

The Public Health Minister of the Catalan Government, Joan Guix, confirmed on Thursday the first case of microcephaly in Spain in a foetus whose mother was infected with the Zika virus. According to what Guix said to 8TV, the woman travelled to parts of South America some months ago and was infected with the Zika virus and dengue. According to the department of Public Health, the foetus has “several malformations.” This case of microcephaly is the first one registered in Spain and the second in Europe.

Schistosomiasis is an acute and chronic parasitic disease caused by blood flatworms (trematodes) of Schistosoma type. It is calculated that at least 258 million people needed treatment in 2014.
