Academic, scientific or professional interest: Tropical parasitic diseases remain a major epidemiological control problem due to high rates of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Out of the 11 priority diseases in the list of the Tropical Diseases Research (TDR) of the World Health Organization (WHO), 7 are parasitic. Besides these, over 400 additional parasite species infect humans on different continents, with shocking prevalence and intensity. Parasitic diseases have devastating indirect effects on the affected population, mainly children, because they delay physical and mental development. At the same time, population movements and high levels of immigration are a real threat to public health in non-tropical countries. In recent years we have witnessed a significant increase in international migration flows that has facilitated the exchange of diseases considered until now unique to developing countries. Our health professionals face every day diseases that a few years ago were considered to be exotic or tropical. This emergence of tropical diseases also contributes the significant increase of Spanish travelers to tropical countries. Parasitic diseases are very complex (which is the reason why none of them has been eradicated yet) and require a multidisciplinary treatment and approach. In light of everything listed above, the growing interest of parasitic diseases is clear.
