The Health and Safety and the Environment Service of Universitat de València has closed the first period of visitation to the hazardous waste store located at the Burjassot-Paterna campus with the attendance of over 300 first grade students of sciences degrees. The aim of the initiative, which could also take place in the second semester if the professors request it, is to promote the good practice in the laboratories with the collaboration of the student body in the proper management of the liquid and solid residues produced in the laboratories. This favours its appropriate management in order to avoid health and environmental problems.
The Environmental technicians have been the visit guides in the waste store for seven years now. They explain the importance of students working with the Universitat laboratories officials in packing, classifying and labelling the waste generated there, both in investigation and teaching, to prevent any kind of impact.
To have an idea of the quantity and variety of waste produced by La Universitat, the Health and Safety and the Environment Service reminds that laboratories generate over 40.000kg with thousands of different compositions. In consequence, the waste is classified in 19 groups, in accordance with its management requirements and its chemical incompatibilities, in order to simplify its later disposal and avoid non-desired mixtures.
