A large sample of the best science that is done on the shores of the Mediterranean disembarks this Friday, September 29, in the Port of Valencia. The University of Valencia and the city join the celebration of the European Researchers’ Night, the largest scientific dissemination event on the continent, with more than thirty activities to bring science closer to all audiences. It will be in Shed 2 of the Port, with free entry, in the morning and afternoon. The organisation of the event is carried out by two projects with European funding, MedNight and Science GTS, where important scientific and academic institutions in the city participate.
The European Researchers’ Night is a scientific dissemination project promoted by the European Commission within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions of the Horizon Europe program, which has taken place simultaneously in almost 400 European cities since 2005. In Valencia, the main event is held in the Port thanks to the collaboration of the MedNight projects, with the participation of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the health research foundations Fisabio and INCLIVA, and Science GTS, where the Universitat de València (UV) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV)are located.
Among the proposed activities, the attending public will be able to learn how the largest particle accelerator in the world, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, works; turn your cell phone into a microscope and learn about the world of bacteria that promote the health of our body; learn healthy habits through food and sports; extract DNA to solve a mystery; or witness a choreography that fuses circus and science in tribute to the discovery of the structure of DNA, the blocks that support life.
Other planned workshops invite us to discover what is inside a plant; to become Indiana Jones with Archaeo-Science; to connect the oceans through new technologies and hunt viruses; to know the power of light, enter the 3D world or take care of the environment by playing; to discover how our lungs work and to implant cells... All workshops are free and can be visited from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 4.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 29. It will take place in Shed 2 of the Port of València (Marina Real Juan Carlos I, s/n, 46024).
The event is organised by the MedNight and Science GTSEuropean projects.MedNight has the participation of 10 consortium institutions: FISABIO, INCLIVA, CSIC, MUDIC, El Kaleidoscopio, SciCo Cyprus, the University of Messina, the Kadir Has University of Istanbul and the European Association of Women Rectors (EWORA), under the coordination of SciCo Greece. Science GTS is a consortium made up of seven public universities and other organisations: Jaume I University of Castellón; Polytechnic University of Valencia; University of Valencia; University of Alicante; Miguel Hernández University of Elche; Polytechnic University of Cartagena; University of Murcia; Seneca Foundation; Institute of Health and Biomedical Research of Alicante (ISABIAL); and ATAMA, Communication and Strategy Agency. Both projects have received funding from the European Commission within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions of the Horizon Europe program.
For the Valencia event, both consortia have the collaboration of the Valencia City Council, the Marina of Valenciaand the La Fe Health Research Institute.
Previous activities
As activities prior to the great Mediterranean science festival in the Port of València, on Tuesday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m., a new session of “Science and Beers” will be held, a fun session of scientific monologues organised by the Fisabio Foundation with the support from the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT). Researchers from the CSIC, UV, UPV and Incliva participate in this session prior to the European Researchers Night. Admission to attend is free until capacity is reached and will take place at La Fábrica de Hielo (José Ballester Gozalvo street, 37, València).
The following day, September 27, the INCLIVA headquarters (Avda. Menéndez Pelayo 4 acc. València) hosts the colloquium Scientists at the forefront of European health research. In this inspiring meeting, INCLIVA researchers who lead or participate in European projects will share their experiences, motivations, and achievements. The audience will be able to learn how they have promoted innovative research and how their work is transforming the way we understand and address health challenges in Europe. Starting at 1 p.m., with free entry upon registration.
