Poster of the third Morning Session on Mathematics

The University of Valencia hosts this Saturday, February 20, online, the third Morning Session on Mathematics, which focuses on the most daily uses of this discipline. It will deal with topics such as the systems and formulas that are in applications used daily or how their interpretation can modify opinions. Amelia Simó, an expert in computational mathematics, and Raúl Ibáñez, a scientific communicator, will deliver the two conferences, which will begin at 11 am. Registration, free of charge, is open at https://ir.uv.es/76dwPVt.

The session is divided into several activities. Amelia Simó, at 11 am, will show in a simple and practical way the mathematical operation of some applications that we use daily such as Google or Photoshop. Raúl Ibáñez, at 12 o’clock, with his lecture “But... who imprisoned Sally? (Mathematics in the dock)” will raise questions about the possible consequences of incorrectly interpreting data or mathematics. Finally, the day will end after a round of questions.

The objective of the Morning Session is to promote a space for debate in which several topics of a mathematical nature are dealt with, but which at the same time are presented in a practical and simple way so that they are clearly explained to the public. The objective is to promote dissemination and show that mathematics goes beyond a paper.

Amelia Simó, graduate and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Valencia, will talk about how mathematical questions such as linear algebra or multivalent statistics are applied to the main computer applications. Mathematical expressions that are translated into systems to filter emails or algorithms to sort searches. Amelia Simó has researched and worked for different institutions such as the UJI, where she has dealt, above all, with mathematics applied to digital images and body scanning.

Raúl Ibáñez Torres is a professor of mathematics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV / EHU), has a long career as a scientific disseminator and has written many books and articles as well as appearances on different television and radio programs. His specialty is Simplècica Geometry and Mathematical Culture. In his conference, examples of false positives in medicine, unjustly imprisoned people, or the publication of erroneous information, among others, will be shown to show the possible consequences of a misinterpretation of mathematics.

This activity, the III Morning Session on Mathematics. Mathematics for daily use, is carried out by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of Valencia in its Dissemination Plan and has the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Science and innovation.
