
Members of two research lines of the IRTIC’s LISITT group have been involved in the development of the UNE 0093 and UNE 0094 specifications by the Data Spaces Reference Centre (CRED). These standards promote semantic interoperability in the agri-food and mobility sectors respectively, and establish it as a key enabler for transforming data into a reusable and scalable asset.
The IRTIC’s involvement in the data space development projects “DS4M Mediterráneo, Data Space for Mobility” and “Development of a data space for verifying green, sustainable, healthy and safe cities from the perspective of sustainable mobility”, both linked to mobility, was crucial to the inclusion of part of the LISITT group, coordinated by Dr Javier Samper, into the CTN-UNE 71/SC 43 working group on “Governance, data management and data spaces” that has overseen the implementation of the standards.
Furthermore, the work carried out at ASOTVAS, which stands for “Artificial intelligence and semantics of Earth observation data for the establishment of the Valencia Anchor Station as a supersite of the CEOS LPV program”, proved essential in enabling the research team to develop the specification relating to the agri-food sector.
The initiative employed artificial intelligence (AI) and data semantics algorithms to enrich satellite-based ground observations. Alongside Professor Samper, researcher David García Rodríguez has been involved in this work, which forms part of the research programme “AI-based semantic Earth observation for crop sustainability and climate change”.
In the field of mobility, the work carried out as part of the CEF LOD-RoadTran18 project, subtitled «Supporting the cross-border use of Road Traffic Data with Linked Open Data based on DATEX II» and linked to a second line of research entitled “Semantic Web, ontologies and Linked Open Data (LOD)”, proved crucial. The project in question supported the re-use of dynamic road traffic data in the Czech Republic and Spain by ensuring that the published data was findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable (FAIR) via national open data portals and the European data portal.
In turn, this enabled it to be linked to any other data from the same sector, or of a different nature, via linked open data. Researchers Julián Gutiérrez and Ana Delgado contributed alongside Samper to the second line of research mentioned.
Interoperability in the agri-food sector and mobility
The UNE 0093 and UNE 0094 standards address the challenge of ensuring that data shared between multiple organizations can be understood, combined and utilized in a consistent manner, using a common semantic framework.
The UNE 0093 standard, “Semantic interoperability in the agri-food sector: inventory of semantic assets and recommendations”, helps to strengthen the foundations for the development of a more efficient and connected agri-food data economy. The document identifies and organizes the sector’s main semantic domains, ranging from primary production and traceability to sustainability and governance, thereby facilitating the reuse of data throughout the entire value chain.
The UNE 0094 specification, “Semantic interoperability in the mobility sector: inventory of semantic assets and recommendations”, which deals with mobility, identifies the main models and standards used in this field. Furthermore, it provides a structured overview of the semantic ecosystem, with a particular focus on the road and rail transport sectors.
Both documents provide recommendations and guidance to facilitate the selection, combination and consistent application of existing semantic models and assets. This facilitates their reuse in data integration and sharing initiatives, as well as in projects in the agri-food and smart mobility sectors and in sectoral data spaces, which strengthen semantic interoperability.
