The Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE), in collaboration with the Scientific Outreach and Culture Network (RedDivulga) of the CRUE’s Sectorial Commission for R&I and the Ignacio Larramendi Foundation, have launched the fourth edition of the competition "#HiloTesis: Your Doctoral Thesis on Social Networks". This contest, organised by CRUE, aims to promote communication skills and science popularisation among doctoral students and recent PhD graduates from the universities that are part of CRUE, including the University of Valencia.
With this competition, research trainees and doctoral students, whether they have completed and defended their doctoral thesis in the last 12 months or are currently working on it, have the opportunity to share their work to enhance the social relevance of research. Last year, 384 theses from 47 universities associated with CRUE were submitted.
To participate, those interested must create a "thread" publication on social networks such as X (formerly Twitter), Threads, Bluesky or Mastodon, or use Instagram's image carousel feature, taking advantage of these platforms as communication channels. The content must be simple, accessible and engaging. In this fourth edition, there will be six prizes of 500 euros each, funded by the Ignacio Larramendi Foundation.
The competition runs from 00:00 on 1 June to 23:59 on 15 June 2024. Entries submitted outside this period will not be considered. Participants must register and provide the link to their thread or carousel via the following form: https://forms.office.com/e/hiewSpVEis. Entries not correctly registered through the form, submitted after the deadline or with incorrect links will not be taken into account.
The first publication of the thread or carousel must include the hashtag #HiloTesis and, if possible, tag or mention @CrueUniversidad, @RedDivulga, @filarramendi, and the participating university's account or their UCC+I, if they have one. For the University of Valencia, tag @cdcienciauv (Science Culture and Innovation Unit) or the institutional account (@UV_EG).
Participants can post their #HiloTesis on multiple social networks but, in the form, they must indicate which one they wish to compete with. To achieve greater dissemination and impact, they are encouraged to post it on several platforms. The thread or carousel can be published in any of the co-official languages of Spain and the university will provide a translated version into Spanish if it is selected for the national phase.
The presentation of #HiloTesis 2024 at the CRUE headquarters was attended by the president of Crue-I+D+i and rector of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Julián Garde, who highlighted that this contest serves to "support young people who are starting out in research". During the presentation, the vice-president of the Ignacio Larramendi Foundation, Carmen Hernando de Larramendi, stated that the aim is to give visibility to the "quiet and silent effort" of university researchers.
