Antonio Lazcano, professor and researcher at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), will speak on nuclear evolution next Monday, October 24, in the Charles Darwin room of the Burjassot Campus of the University of Valencia (UV), at 12 noon. The lecture is organised by the Faculty of Biological Sciences, the Institute for Integrative Systems Biology (I2SysBio) and the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the UV and it's open to the public.
Lazcano will give the lecture “Endosimbiosi i evolució cel·lular: l’origen del nucli” to comment on the updates on the research he is carrying out on the origin of the cell nucleus in collaboration with Juli Peretó, full professor from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the UV and researcher in the I2SysBio, joint center of the UV and the CSIC. This research is based on the theory of the scientist Lynn Margulis, who gave evolutionary prominence to inter-species cooperation.
The scientist, who is a member of the National College of Mexico, full professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and honorary doctor by the University of Valencia, has managed to be the only Latin American to have chaired the International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life (ISSOL) twice in a row. In addition, he has published 200 articles and chapters in science magazines for the general public and has written some books such as El Origen de la Vida (which became a bestseller with more than 800,000 copies sold) or La Chispa de la Vida.
He has also been part of different advisory councils, including those of NASA and other international organisations. He has also received the Founders Medal from the University of San Francisco de Quito (2005), the National University Award for Research in Natural Sciences from UNAM (2007) and the Guillaume Medal from the France College (2018), among others.
The activity has the support of the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECyT).
