The University of Valencia (UV) and the Espai Ciència of the Octubre Centre de Cultura Contemporània (OCCC) are celebrating Darwin Day with two lectures this Wednesday, February 8. At 1 p.m., Mireia Coscollá, researcher of the Ramon y Cajal program at the Institute of Integrative Biology of Systems (I2SysBio, joint centre of the University of Valencia and the CSIC) and expert in dealing with the coevolution between pathogens and hosts, at the Charles Darwin room on the Burjassot-Paterna campus.

In the evening, at 7 p.m., the OCCC will discuss the appearance of life in the lecture “Quan la química planetària esdevingué vida” (‘When planetary chemistry became life’). This science bar will be moderated by the journalist Reis Juan and will feature Juli Peretó, professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the UV and member of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans and I2SysBio. Peretó is also the author of the book Un planeta creatiu. Com va començar la vida en la Terra i com la fabricarem en el laboratori (‘A creative planet. How life began on Earth and how we will manufacture it in the laboratory’) (Institució Alfons el Magnànim, 2022).

Darwin Day is celebrated annually on February 12 on the occasion of the birth of the English naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882), with dissemination and commemoration activities held around the world and in order to reflect and act on the progress of science and spread its scientific legacy on evolution.

This activity has the support of the following institutions: Institut d’Estudis Catalans, Catalan Society of Biology, Acció Cultural del País Valencià, Octubre Centre de Cultura Contemporània (OCCC) and Science Dissemination Chair-Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of Valencia. Also, Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECyT), Ministry of Science and Innovation, Mètode magazine, Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Faculty of Biological Sciences (UV), Museum of Natural History (UV), Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology (UV), Institute of Integrative Systems Biology (I2SysBio, UV-CSIC) and Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI).
