The Universitat de València presents the Autumn Concerts cycle of the Music Club UV, which includes a total of 13 performances from 2 October to 22 December. The Sapiencia Chapel of La Nau Cultural Centre UV, the Muralla Hall of the Rector Peset Residence Hall, the Joan Plaça Auditorium of the Botanical Garden UV and the Charles Darwin Room on the Burjassot-Paterna campus will host the different performances in the cycle.

Concerts are free with a prior invitation —which can be booked 72 hours in advance at entrades.fundacio.es/o/20—, except for those taking place at the Joan Plaça Auditorium and the Charles Darwin Room, that will be free until full capacity.

University music and young talent in dialogue with the city

One of the main new features of this year’s programme is the collaboration with València Music City, a strategic alliance that positions university music as a key element in the cultural projection of València and strengthens the shared commitment of the Universitat de València and València Music City to consolidating the city as an international reference for creation, training and live music. 

Within this framework of promoting music at the university, professionalising the music sector and fostering education, the cycle particularly focuses on young musicians linked to the Orquestra Filharmònica of the Universitat de València (OFUV) with the participation of several chamber ensembles made up of these performers, as well as the Orfeó Universitari de València.

On Wednesday, 7 October, the Sapiencia Chapel will host a performance by the winners of the sixth edition of the Activa Música Contest UV, pianists Carlos Ribes García and Catiana-Mele, who will perform their own works as well as works by other composers, such as Maurice Ravelric and Frédéric Chopin.

The programme will continue to support chamber ensembles linked to the University through different performances throughout the academic year, alongside established performers and ensembles with extensive careers.

The presence of Valencian music

As usual, Valencian music will have a prominent presence in the programme. Coinciding with the celebration of the 3rd Jubilee Year of Sant Calze in València, the Orfeó Universitari of València, under the direction of Francesc Valldecabres, will open the cycle on Friday, 2 October, at the Sapiencia Chapel of La Nau with Calix, heri et hodie: músiques per al Sant Calze de València.

The performance, premiered this past June as part of the Serenates festival, includes works by Antoni Montesinos, Juan Gómez Alemany and Llum Martín, among other composers, and it offers a musical journey connected to the tradition and the history of Sant Calze of València.

The presence of Valencian music will continue throughout the cycle with other performances, such as Compositores valencianes, which will take place on Wednesday, 4 November, at the Sapiencia Chapel, in collaboration with Unitat d’Igualtat UV. Soprano María Velasco and pianist Álvar Rubio will perform works by Matilde Salvador, Raquel Mínguez and Ángeles López-Artiga, among other composers.

Moreover, as part of this exploration of Valencian musical heritage, on Tuesday, 17 November, pianist Marisa Blanes will present the programme Óscar Esplà i el somni musical d’una generació at the Muralla Hall, featuring works by Óscar Esplà, Julian Bautista and Ernesto Halffter. 

From early music to sound experimentation 

The diversity of repertoires will be another defining feature of the cycle, which will present performances spanning different periods of music history, with a significant focus on early music.

In this section, the concerts by ensembles specialised in ancient and Baroque music –Lluís Vich Vocalis– stand out. They will perform works by Jacobus Gallus, Clément Janequin and Thomas Arne, on Wednesday, 21 October at the Sapiencia Chapel, and by Victoria Musicae, with the programme Prophetiae Sibyllarum, featuring works by Orlando di Lasso, on Wednesday, 9 December, also at the chapel.

In the same section, on Wednesday, 18 November, at La Nau, Veus de Cambra del Cor Jove of the Comunitat Valenciana, under the musical direction of Josep Vicent Balaguer, will present D’anada i tornada: músiques en transit a la València del Renaixement, with works by Bartolomé Cárceres, Costanzo Festa and Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina, among others.

Among the most singular proposals of the cycle, the concert on Tuesday, 27 October at the Muralla Hall of the Rector Peset Hall of Residence stands out. Alfons Rochera Morales, on Baroque, classical and electric cello, and Darío González Ivars, on theorbo and Baroque, classical and electric guitar, propose with Sérénade a tour through technical and sound evolution of these instruments, from the Baroque period to the present day, with works by Marin Marais, Manuel de Falla and George Gershwin.

A diverse programme leading up to the Christmas concert

The cycle continues in November with performances that broaden the diversity of formats and repertoires, such as Entre l’Europa oriental i occidental, featuring the clarinettist Juan Antonio Fenollar Sala, bassoonist Héctor Soler Lluch and pianist Aida Velert Hernández, who will perform on Wednesday, 11 November at the Sapiencia Chapel.

The cycle will conclude on Tuesday, 22 December at 1:00pm, in the Charles Darwin Room on the Burjassot campus, with the traditional Concert de Nadal de la Orquestra Filharmònica de la Universitat de València (OFUV), conducted by Hilari García Gázquez, in collaboration with Cultura al Campus.

With this new edition, the Music club UV consolidates a programme that combines the promotion of young talent and musical training with the dissemination of the musical heritage and contemporary creation, with expanding its network of collaboration with institutions and sector professionals.
