The University of Valencia (UV) is the third Spanish higher education centre and the first in Valencia in the latest update of the Transparent Ranking: Top Universities by Citations in Top Google Scholar, which analyses the citations of the authors’ scientific articles of each institution. Between 2023 and 2024 is when the UV has increased the number of citations of its articles the most, going from 2,047,064 to 2,698,389 (651,325 more, an increase of 31.81%).
The University of Valencia is in world position 180, the same as in 2023, although the number of centres that have been classified has increased from 4,361 to 5,650; while at European level it is 56. On a Spanish scale, it is consolidated in third position and continues as the first higher education centre in Valencia.
The Transparent Ranking is a version of the Webometrics ranking, which does not use the institutional profiles of Google Scholar Citations (GSC), at the request of many universities, but those of the authors of each institution. GSC provides an easy way to track article citations, so each author can verify who is citing their publications, chart citations over time, and calculate various citation metrics.
This classification is led on an international scale by the universities of Harvard, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; while at European level it is led by those of Cambridge, Oxford and the College of London. In Spain, the Universities of Barcelona and Complutense of Madrid are the only universities that surpass that of Valencia and, in terms of regional area, the second and third universities are the Polytechnic of Valencia and Alicante (in world positions 341 and 461, respectively).
