Demonstration conference on papercutting tradition in the Chinese New Year and its meaning, taught by professor Adan Liu.
China’s papercutting art has existed during centuries and, in its origins, it was mainly used in religious ceremonies and rituals. It is considered as an art linked to women; in fact, already back in the Tang Dynasty, we could find women who used papercutting as headdresses, a symbol of beauty and prosperity. Nowadays, it is mainly used for decoration and it has a special meaning in Chinese festivities. In the festivity of the New Year, for example, house-doors are decorated with paper cutouts in order to attract good luck. The Chinese people stick paper patterns in windows, doors and lintels.
