Assessment and main threats affecting cetacean populations in the southern Mediterranean Cetacean Migration Corridor (COMICET-SUR). (2020-2021).
Twenty-two species of cetaceans have been recorded in the Mediterranean, of which eight have regular populations: the fin whale, the sperm whale, the long-finned pilot whale, the Risso's dolphin, the Cuvier's beaked whale, the killer whale, the bottlenose dolphin, the common dolphin and the striped dolphin. These species are usually present in the waters of the Marine Protected Area “Mediterranean Cetacean Migration Corridor”. In addition, all these species are protected in various ways.
This project will investigate, during 2020-2021, the distribution and abundance of cetacean populations in the southern part of said protected area and will assess the main anthropogenic threats, such as maritime traffic and interaction with fisheries, in order to provide baseline information to establish future management measures and dynamic management. With the support of the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Biodiversity Foundation.
