The Marine Zoology Unit is located in the Science Park of the Universitat de València in a building specially designed and equipped with modern facilities for studies in the fields of parasitology and conservation biology.
The Cavanilles Institute facilities attached to the Marine Zoology Unit consist of two laboratories equipped with conventional binocular and optical microscopes and equipment for histology and image analysis, a seminar room that can accommodate up to 20 people and a computer room with four network servers. The Unit also has a wet laboratory, optimally equipped for necropsies of marine animals, including medium-sized cetaceans, and a 30m2 freezer room and smaller freezers.
Our researchers have access to the Universitat de València's shared facilities, such as DNA and protein sequencers, electron microscopy equipment and bibliographic services including scientific databases (Web of Science, Science Citation Index, Medline, Current Contents, Helminthological Abstracts and WOK) and online access to more than 4,000 scientific journals.
The Marine Zoology Unit shares a building with one of the most unique facilities of the Universitat de València’s Science Park: the Experimental Aquarium Pilot Plant, which is managed by the Central Experimental Research Support Service. This experimental aquaculture plant takes up about 500m2 and is designed in three contiguous areas, each containing different types of tanks and a modular system for water treatment.
The entire facility has a supply of hot and cold water, sea water, dechlorinated fresh water and deionised water, a centralised water recycling circuit and a system for the treatment, filtering and sterilisation of waste. The aim of this unique facility is to meet the R&D needs of both academic and private sectors.
