Professor Carmen Amaro is an expert in pathogenesis and microbial evolution, and a researcher specialising in Vibrio vulnificus, an aquatic zoonotic pathogen related to climate change. She founded the PAFZP (Pathogens in Aquaculture: Fish and Zoonotic Pathogens) team in 2004. This team conducts both fundamental academic research and applied research for the aquaculture-related industry. Professor Amaro is considered a world authority on the biology and diseases (vibriosis) caused by Vibrio vulnificus. She ranks third in the world in the number of articles on V. vulnificus and first in the number of articles on vibriosis, according to the Scopus database. She has trained more than 50 researchers within his research team, supervising Spanish and foreign postdoctoral, predoctoral and postgraduate students. She is a permanent member of the organising committee of international congresses on Vibrio and is a consultant specializing in diseases caused by V. vulnificus for the World Health Organization and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Belen Fouz is a full time associate professor at ERI BioTecMed and a member of the research group "Pathogens in Aquaculture", responsible for applied research in the aquaculture industry. Her career has focused on the study of pathologies caused by bacteria or viruses, with special emphasis on applied research in collaboration with aquaculture companies. His extensive experience has provided him with a unique solid base in the field of infections, which has allowed him to establish interdisciplinary collaborations, techniques and protocols. He has worked extensively on the development and evaluation of the efficacy of vaccines and diets for farmed fish over the years. In addition, he has conducted studies on the gut microbiome of fish using massive sequencing techniques. She has participated in 20 publicly funded R&D projects (5 as lead scientist) and has been involved in more than 30 industry-funded projects (mostly as lead scientist). In addition, she is co-author of 55 publications in international journals and several book chapters and has directed 20 master's research projects.
