Cultural Identity in the Spanish Education System. A Comparative Historical Study, delivered by Carlos Novella García, from the Catholic University of Valencia.
Date: Monday, 27 April 2026
Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Sciences, University of Valencia
Room: ECHE Seminar Room, 3rd floor
Address: Avenida Blasco Ibáñez, 30, 46010 Valencia, Spain
Cultural identity is regarded as a human right that fosters social cohesion through the values, traditions, beliefs, and behaviours shared by a given social group. Understanding the historical evolution of this concept in Spain through its educational legislation will enable us to grasp its current significance in a Spanish society undergoing constant change and facing ongoing educational challenges that emerge today in a globalised world. Addressing this issue from a comparative perspective on education systems may help us identify parallels that can shed the necessary light on how to confront such challenges. When reflecting retrospectively on the Spanish education system, we must bear in mind that the ultimate aim is also to achieve a prospective vision; that is, to prepare the education of future generations in a spirit of respect, commitment, and social responsibility.
