The BBVA Foundation's Leonardo Grants have selected the research project of Professor Cristina Real from among 58 personal and innovative projects in different areas of knowledge.

His project "The diet of Neanderthals and Sapiens. Experimental evaluation of the processing of rabbits and their nutritional quality" aims to study in depth the diet of the human groups, both Neanderthals and Sapiens, who populated southern Europe during the Palaeolithic period. In this area, small prey, mainly rabbits, formed an essential part of their diet. The research evaluates the processing and consumption techniques applied to the rabbit, in order to verify differences and similarities between the two groups.

The methodology proposes an experimental programme that includes various forms of rabbit processing for consumption and conservation, combined with a nutritional analysis of the resources obtained. On the other hand, the analysis of the cut marks and fractures made during processing and their comparison with bone remains from archaeological sites in the area will be carried out.

The research will determine, from a qualitative perspective, the influence of diet on the development and behaviour of Neanderthal and Sapiens populations.
