Celebration of the III International Congress on Law, Rights and the Elderly: the right to housing, on 29 and 30 October, 2025.
Coming soon, in April 2026, the I Conference on the right to housing for older people will be held: housing, care and new housing alternatives.
General objectives: The main objective of the Congress was to address housing rights for older people from a wide and comprehensive perspective, so that it can be a starting point for the work to develop in the three project sessions that will be organised during the two years course. The sessions will focus on each of the main ideas thereof –housing-care, to be celebrated in April, 2026; housing-environment, and housing-affordability–. This explains the reason why the chosen theme for the Congress of 2025 –third edition of the Congress– is right to housing.
Specific objectives:
- Analysing, from a human rights perspective, the barriers that limit access and permanence for a decent and affordable housing to older people.
- Identifying and discussing innovative models, such as cohousing, reverse mortgage, or transfer of use, that contribute to an economic and social autonomy in old age.
- Promoting an intersectional vision that assists gender diversity, rurality, disability, and migration in housing policies for older people.
- Fostering the exchange of national and international experiences to boost inclusive public practices and policies.
- Stimulating the collaboration among scholars, public administrations, civil society, and private sector in the design of sustainable housing solutions.
Forum with social agents: As a way of closing the Congress, the discussion with the social agents’ proposals took place on the afternoon of the 30th. The dialogue with social agents that was scheduled in the project request as an opening activity was materialised. Several representatives participated in the discussion: a representative of collaborative and cooperating housing –from the Neiting cooperative–, a representative of retirement homes –the president of AERTE–, a representative of the Consejo Valenciano de Personas Mayores (Valencian Council of Senior People), and a representative of the Social Services field –from the Faculty of Social Sciences of UV).
