Description

The study of human development and its optimisation is a challenge not only for personal health but also for public health worldwide. The most current approach in health psychology is not focused on illness but on health behaviours, assessment and early detection, intervention in everyday life contexts, approaches centred on the family and the context, lifestyles, etc., and their effects on the overall health status of the person.

In this sense our group frames its objectives in the WHO (1948) definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or disability. Challenges include, for example, early intervention in developmental disorders, developmental optimisation throughout the life cycle, as well as assessment and intervention in other non-communicable diseases (NCDs) (such as cognitive impairment, frailty syndrome, etc.), changing lifestyles, improving quality of life, fostering positive and meaningful social and family interaction in development and health, etc.

Our research activity has focused on the influence of social, family and cultural factors on positive and pathological human development, as well as their evaluation and intervention. We have carried out numerous basic and applied research projects, being therefore an example of a multidisciplinary group with interaction between basic and clinical researchers and with a profile of publications and funded projects that respond to this criterion.

Goals CT

The objectives of the research group are the study and development of assessment and intervention techniques that promote cognitive functions throughout the life cycle, with the aim of achieving a better quality of life both for people who may suffer any alteration and for their family, educational and social context. The aim is also to improve and promote health, prevent and treat illness, identify risk factors, optimise lifestyles, etc., in order to achieve, in short, functional improvements at any point in the life cycle.

Research lines
  • Psychology of Ageing

Active and healthy ageing is a construct of growing relevance. In its psychological aspect, clinical (cognitive and emotional), functional, cultural and socio-familial aspects must be included, as well as different demographic and lifestyle variables. Among the objectives of the group is the assessment and intervention throughout the life cycle, including the optimisation of their development, both of the persons or patients involved and their family environment, carers, etc., especially in the cognitive, emotional, functional and lifestyle areas. Within frailty in ageing, the topic of cognitive frailty and the variables involved in it is of particular interest.

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders

Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) are, by definition, dynamic and changing over time. This dynamism of neurodevelopmental disorders means that comorbidity with other disorders and diseases is very high throughout the life cycle, especially in adulthood and ageing. The aim of the Research Group is to study these disorders and their evolution over time, with special emphasis on techniques and methods that improve the abilities of the people who suffer from them and their family environment, so as to generate a better quality of life, promoting the general health not only of the person with a Developmental Disorder but of all the members of the family unit.
